Inadequate credentials and skills are usually the biggest impediments when it comes to changing jobs. You might be a perfect fit for several job ads if one skill did not rule you out as a candidate. If that is the case with you, start considering different ways to acquire that skill.

In some cases, you can acquire a new skill in as little as three months. However, some skills might take up to three years to learn. Knowing how long it will take to gain a new skill is important, as it will help you to start as soon as possible. Before you attain full credentials for some skills, you will have to get entry-level certification.

As long as you plan to get full certification, you can get yourself through the doors of certain jobs by getting entry-level certification. Finding the time to study while working a fulltime job can be hard but the effort will be worth it. If cost is a hindrance, you should look for free online courses and study them.


Nurture a Professional Network

Social media not only gives you a chance to develop thought leadership but it also allows you to grow and nurture a professional network. Develop your LinkedIn Profile and constantly be reaching out to professionals within your industry that could provide future opportunities. 

Knowing the right people and learning new skills are some of the things that you can do to advance in your career. If you want a new job, knowing the right people is a step in the right direction. As long as you stay in touch with your professional colleagues, you will come to their minds when a new job position becomes available.
