WORKPLACE SUCCESS / 01 April 2019Taking Your NYR to the next step
When an employer decides to hire you, the employer wants to find qualities that the industry is looking for. Each person has both strong and weak skills that they need to improve on. Here are some skills that employees are looking for.
Pro Tip: If you feel you need to improve on one of these areas of the following, write these down onto a post-it, or your phone, and strive to improve the skill! This way your employer can see that you are growing as a person professionally and personally.
Become the person who acts before everyone else. This personality trait will take you miles ahead of other people who don’t show leadership qualities. A person with leadership qualities shows confidence and demonstrates that they are willing to put more effort in than other people around them. Having this leadership quality will also give you the potential to move higher within the company ladder.
DependableBeing dependable is important because then your boss can trust that you are responsible. This skill may even help you to have a much more flexible work schedule. For example, if your employer knows that you get work done, you have a higher chance of coming in later, or can work with music. Furthermore, your workplace relationship will be stronger and allow your whole team to function much more cohesively.
CommunicationThere are two types of communication. Physical communication and verbal communication. Both of these types are important for a company to succeed. Thus, communication is one of the most vital skills an employer looks for. Without communication, employees and employers can ruin their relationships professionally and could potentially create disasters. There are many people who do not end up communicating as well as an employer wants. For example, employees failing to check their e-mails or phone calls is a common issue within communication.
Adjust to feedbackLearning to adjust to feedback will make your boss happy since this means you can accept criticism. With this feedback, your boss wants to see you can make professional decisions and learn from others experiences. Effective feedback, both negative and positive, will help both the company and you individually.
Time ManagementGood time management can allow you to efficiently and effectively get work done. If an employer gives many tasks to accomplish within a short time span, the employer expects you to manage your time appropriately to get the work done. This skill will help you set your priorities in order and also impress your boss as you will have all your work done!
Problem Solving & CreativityFurthermore, as a person is more creative, new ideas and strategies are created to form a better plan for a team, or company. This is done by looking at different angles of a problem and strategizing the best approach. Currently, creativity is a skill that is vital towards the success of a company.
Research Ability:Although an employer wants you to ask questions, they probably do not want to be asked questions such as “do we need to put the coffee filter in the coffee pot?” Questions such as these are things that you can do on your own and research. Likewise, an employer craves your ability to look things up or ask questions on your own that you can independently do. Not only does this speed up efficiency for the boss, but it allows you to learn something new then recall the information without bothering other people around you!
