If you want a job, make a resume. If you really want a job, create a digital profile. But if you really, really, REALLY want a job, showcase your behavioral and technical skills on a personal website.
More and more recruiters are realizing the importance of being able to hire right the first time, avoid turnover rates and determine from the beginning whether or not a candidate is going to fit within the company’s existing culture. Digital profiles give recruiters an idea of who the candidate is beyond a piece of paper.
Paper resumes are lame, I agree. So why not just stick with social media profiles?
Social media’s awesome. It lets you connect with people, find open positions, and stay informed about your favorite companies. But everyone else uses social media. You need to stay ahead of the competition. Creating a website shows future employers that you’ve learned tangible skills AND highlights your commitment to career advancement.

Same here! There are tons of free tools you can use to create websites for non-programmers to take advantage of. Instead of seeing this as a coding assignment, try treating it like a business project.
What does that mean?
It means you’re a business. And your product is YOU. Advertise your skills, strengths, and work experience just like any other business would. Start by adding a landing page. A short description will let your personality shine more than it can on a traditional resume. Include anything that you believe would make you stand out among the rest. Collecting information from people who visit your website is also important. I’d recommend tossing in a form that asks for name and email. It might not get any responses, but this can help you reach out to potential employers who find your ambition promising. After all, you DID make your own website.

Glad you asked. If you’re a designer, upload your portfolio. Then take it a step further- reorganize your website to match your design style and blow away anyone who checks it out. Are you a coder? Throw in a Java web app or edit in some JS features. Whatever your expertise is, revolve your website around it.
Ok you’ve convinced me! How do I begin?
Buy a domain from GoDaddy, create a free website from Wordpress, and link the domain name to your website! But there’s one more thing: no one knows who you are and no one cares about your website. So make them care. Spread the word and gain awareness on Facebook/Twitter by learning the essentials of social media marketing. If that’s not your thing, try your hand at search engine optimization, one of the most valuable skills to have in today’s job market.
