We surveyed 180 students about their expectations of the job market. A majority of individuals surveyed are seeking a job or internship. Finding a solid position is by no means an easy task, so we’re here to offer you some advice and help you get you started on your path to success.
The job itself is important, but don’t forget that the environment and the people you work with can make or break your productivity.
There are many factors to consider when choosing a place to work; however, one factor that people tend to overlook is the importance of a work environment. The stresses of work itself take a toll on one’s well-being, and the work environment helps alleviate that stress. It helps everyone stay motivated and driven if you are surrounded by people who are working towards the same goals. The work environment is made of a few different components. The first is communication. Communication is essential in being able to cohesively collaborate on projects with your co-workers. A work environment with good communication allows for open discussion among all levels of hierarchy.
Another component is your attitude. A good work attitude is one that welcomes creativity and fosters growth. Attitude builds off of strong interpersonal communication and allows for the expression of new ideas. The physical environment of the workplace can also greatly affect your productivity and energy. A clean environment allows for workers to focus on their task instead of the cluster around them. All of these are important factors that students expect from their work environment.
So what really happens at an interview?

The wave of relief and pride after being one of the few students chosen to move onto the interview process is indescribable. However, soon after that relief comes the big question: What should you expect?
Most students go into an interview expecting a mix of both behavioral and technical questions meant to decide whether a candidate is a right fit for the position. The interview is a step further from the resume; it gives the employer an opportunity to see who you are as an individual and a potential employee. It is the time where you should emphasize how you stand out from the rest of the crowd, instead of worrying about finding the “perfect” response to the sea of possible questions. After all, you should never be too certain about what to expect at an interview. One student said that their interviewer asked them to “tell a pickup line.” Another student reported that they were interviewed by their potential co-workers who “took turns asking [them] a couple questions and then collectively went to talk to their manager.” Anything could happen during an interview! Your role is to show them why you are the best candidate for the job.
We all have an idea of what kind of job we’re looking for, but what’s next?
After you’ve narrowed down what you’re looking for, the next step is to start heading down the path to find the job that best fits you. The best place to begin is to research a company or organization that you’re interested in joining. You can browse company websites, find their career pages, and learn about the company through their social media profiles. Focus on job descriptions when you are looking for a job. Focus on minimum qualifications; these will help you identify whether or not you’ll be a good fit for the position. Using a site like Glassdoor can help you to know what other people are saying about working at said company, but remember, those should always be taken with a grain of salt - especially if the person doesn’t work there anymore.
Learn to utilize your network! Getting in touch with recruiters, friends, or even acquaintances will allow you to discover amazing new opportunities. You can meet up with people that have similar career goals and interests as you. Visit your career center for free resources that can help lead you in the right direction. Chances are, they’ll also be able to offer you invaluable advice that will help you breeze past the anxiety of the job search and excel at standing out as an applicant.
