At some point in their lives, every person starts looking for a job. Some people get really lucky and find the perfect place for themselves literally days after they started their job-seeking campaign. But others spend months or even years, hoping to find that employer, who wants to hire them.
It can be depressing at times, especially when all the effort doesn't bring in quick results. This is when people start losing their hope and motivation. So we prepared a list of advice for you on how to gain that self-confidence back and motivate yourself.
1) Write down your goals
It all looks pretty abstract in our heads when we plan something, but when we write things down we are able to see things more clearly and know what we need to do. Richard, a manager at GNC said that,
“As an employee and manager, the best way I keep motivated and hard-charging is journaling. Because when you write your goals down they come to life. And at the end of the day if you hit your goals then you had a successful day. String a lot of days in a row and you’ve had a successful month than years then career”
At times it’s hard to see how much you have accomplished but when you write them down, you are able to look back at all you have accomplished. Completing things even small tasks give you a sense of accomplishment. When one completes their goals they gain confidence to know that they can reach any goal they make.
2) Plan your day in advance
A daily schedule is crucial. Sadly, not everyone understands that. It is so much easier to achieve your goals when you have a strict plan of what to do during the day. All you have to do is just follow it. According to Kris Hughes a project manager at ProjectManager.com,
“Being self-motivated is about being goal driven. Self-motivated people set goals that are both short-term and long-term to ensure they always have a bigger picture to be working toward as they sit down to get things done each day. Breaking longer-term goals down into simpler, more achievable short-term goals allows for an intrinsic motivation that helps you to keep positive momentum from one day to the next.”
Start every day with your big goal in mind and then plan out your day with using your short-term goals as steps to reach your long-term goal. These days we are blessed to have the technology to help us make our long-term goals into short-term goals and to help us plan out each day.
Google Calendar is a great way to organize general plans for the day, tasks that need to get done and notes that you want to keep. Google calendar will directly link to your phone, which is great because it allows you to look at your goals daily and helps you to stay focused on what you want to accomplish.
3) Get inspired by others
When you are feeling down, someone else’s success might make you go even deeper in self-pity. Do not let that happen! Use others’ wins as stories to learn from, and get inspired by them. What does that other person have, that you don’t? And how can you possibly change that? Use stories of success in your professional field. You will see that hard work and self-motivation can do miracles. As mentioned by Pauline Farris, one of the writers for The Word Point, this is exactly how she got her dream job.
4) Give your body a rest
It is hard to keep a positive mood and high motivation when your body is tired. So make sure you get enough sleep, eat clean and avoid major stress situations. When you take good care of yourself you will see how positive you will eventually become. And in this case getting yourself motivated will become even easier.
Also, it would be a really great idea to start working out. People tend to feel more confident when they are at the peak of their physical shape. Not only your body will look awesome, but you will also be more confident during your social interactions.
5) Do not put a limit to your goals
Who told you that you cannot apply for the job of your dreams? You might think you will never get the job but you never know until you try. Instead of thinking you are not going to get the job, think positively. Being positive with your goals and stretching yourself can make a huge difference.
Usain Bolt once said that "It is important to set goals in life. I set mine to the highest standard I can achieve". If Usain Bolt decided after the 2008 Olympics that running a 100-meter race in 9.69 seconds was good enough then he might not have broken the world record in the following year with running a 100-meter race in 9.58 seconds. When you don’t put a limit on your goals, you are able to go farther than you could ever imagine.
6) Set your priorities straight
Make sure you know, what you are fighting for. Ian McClarty, President and CEO of PhoenixNAP Global IT Solutions said that,
“Self-motivation depends entirely on the type of person and what gets them out of bed each morning. Is the motivation financial, professional, or even knowledge-based.”
What do you want out of your career? What are you willing to do to get there? Give yourself some time to dream, your motivation depends greatly on that.
Danielle Roberts, Co-founder at Boomer Benefits notes:
“When hiring, I’m always looking for people who truly want to be the best at what they are doing.. they need that inner something that causes them to challenge themselves every day. We ask them in their interview about what motivates them in life. A great question that really gives insight into what makes that person tick.”
Find out what motivates you and keep working hard to stay confident in yourself even when it starts to feel hopeless. When you set your priorities straight and stay confident, you will find the job that is right for you.
7) Don’t be too hard on yourself
Many people tend to blame themselves for every little mistake they make. But you need to understand, that not one single person in this world is perfect and mistakes are made by everyone. You have to be easier on yourself at the moment of failure and treat yourself at the time of success. Even the best of us had to start at the bottom and make our way to the top. For example, Joanne Rowling had to go through a lot before she actually got successful.
These are 7 basic tips on how to stay self-motivated when you are looking for a job. We really hope it helps you on your road to achieving your goals. Stay happy and motivated!
