How to Stand Out With Limited Experience

At some point in our lives we will hear the words “what are your qualifications for this job” during an interview and how you answer this question will be a large deciding factor as to whether you will land the job. For some, this will be a walk in the park, but for the rest of us, it may be the most difficult question to answer on the spot. However, this is not the end of the road for you because with a few tips and tricks, you can nail this question and impress your future boss.


RESEARCH: 

For starters, employers are looking for someone who would adequately fit the job description and excel in their company, so before applying for the job, find out exactly what you will be doing in that position and see what you have done in the past that could fit the description.Take for example a job that deals with a lot of sales or marketing. You can talk about the time you called people to raise money for a charity and how you dealt with rejection. Also include how you are great with design, video skills, social media, or any other form of advertising that can make you stand out.  


GET THE EXPERIENCE:

Now bear with me here, charities are always looking for people to help, so going in for a weekend and getting that experience can easily be found while still helping those in need. Not only does this build your people skills, it can also look great on any resume or LinkedIn account. Spending a few hours a week can go a really long way and it can show your boss that you are motivated for the job.

  

EMPHASIZE YOUR SOFT SKILLS:

 Do you have a story of how you were able to lead multiple people to do a task? Great, use it. Have you ever been so persistent that you continued to work on something until you achieved success? Great, tell it. Soft skills are just as important as your hard skills because they show what kind of person you are. If an employer sees a candidate who is a persistent leader that shows great opportunity to the company versus someone who has the job qualifications but shows none of the traits they are looking for, you bet that the candidate with the soft skills will get the job.

You want to keep in mind that people enjoy being around people with traits of success and if you have soft skills to back it up, you can show what the resume doesn’t tell employers.  


DRESS TO IMPRESS:

It goes without saying that during the interview you will need to look very professional and confident. Often times, the first few minutes determine whether you will get the job or not. With that said, Give a strong firm handshake while looking in the eyes of your employer, speak with confidence while talking, and stand tall to look presentable. Keep in mind that employers may look at what you do before and after your interview, so always be formal and never let your guard down during this time.
