There comes a time in adulthood where you are faced with getting a job. Most of the time employers will hand you an application and all you need to do is complete the form, hand it in, and wait for a call regarding the position. However, now a days, I have noticed that many companies are either posting their jobs through an online database or companies are just looking to accept resumes from potential applicants. The problem is that the majority of students seeking employment are uneducated on what should be included in a resume.
Personally, I was never taught how to create a resume, but by looking at examples online, I was able to create an exceptional resume by using these steps. So if you find yourself overwhelmed and stressed out about creating a resume, do not worry! Even if you do not have work experience, you still have accomplished many achievements that employers are looking for.
Check out these 6 steps in creating a fast and efficient resume:
1. Find a Job for your resume
The first step is to apply to jobs that you would be interested in working for. Once you have a company in mind, figure out what the job of the position is. 2. Figure out your sections
When writing your resume, I found it helpful to organize it using different subheadings.
For example, here is my resume as a template to help you create your subheadings. As you can see for my resume, I decided to organize my resume by: Objective, Education, Skills, Experience, and Activities.
Feel free to change any of these sections these are just ones I found very helpful. Many other resumes include an Achievement section, where students include their GPA or awards they received while attending college. (And of course, do not forget to add a header section, which includes your name, address, email, and phone number). 3. List Relevant Experiences
Now that you have some sort of idea on how you would like to organize your resume, think about all the experience you might have. This can be volunteer work that you have done, different internships, and even work experience. All the positions on your resume should be in reverse chronological experience, so start with your most recent experiences and go back from there. After listing the positions make sure to include the start and end date as well as a little description of what your duties consisted of when you were employed.
You should not just be limiting your experience to paid positions and internships. As I mentioned before you definitely want to include any volunteer roles, extracurriculars, leadership positions, or side jobs you have going on.
4. Consider your Activities
Since you have all your experiences, now think about the activities you are involved in. Employers like to see that you are also involved in extracurricular activities as well. So include any activity that you are involved in on or off campus. This includes sports teams, work you do on campus or off campus, internships, volunteer work, and clubs. You may also include the position you hold in your activities or clubs. Do not forget to include the dates you participated in these activities. For example, on your resume, it may say: Club Member, Ski and Snowboarding Club of UC Davis (August 2014- Present). You do not have to include additional information about the club, but you are more than welcome to, which will add more information to educate your employer.
5. Edit it Down
By this point, you should have exceeded the one page or just about one page full. Now that you have your different sections and relevant experience, now is the time to edit out anything that is not serving an effective purpose for your resume.
What counts as effective? Consider if the experience is relevant, interesting, or impressive enough to hold a conversation with. The majority of the time when employers look over your resume they are going to ask you to explain your experience at your recent job or last job you had. For example, under the experience subheading for your resume, having dog walking experience will not be very beneficial to have if you are applying for a sales position. Instead, list experiences or skills that you have in sales and marketing so you are able to show employers that you are perfect for the job.
When deciding what to include in your resume, it depends on the position in which you are applying for. So feel free to have a master resume, where you include all your experiences. Then for the copies you send to future employees, you may edit out irrelevant experiences and include the experiences that are necessary.
6. Make it Pretty
Now that you have all your information, now is the time to find a format that works best for you! The format is very crucial in displaying your information. When employers are looking at your resume, you want them to be able to find your information fast instead of looking at information that is unorganized.
There are many ways to format your resume. You can either use the templates that are provided throughout Microsoft Word, or use one of these lovely resume templates. You can also create your own template manually. This can be done by changing font sizes, inserting text boxes, adding indents and using bolding and italicizing efficiently. I personally like to use this method, because it gives you a little more freedom on the amount of information you would like to add. Most of the templates limit you on the amount of experience you have, so if you feel you have more than 4 education or work experiences it may be better to just create your own.
And look at that you have created an effective resume in such little time!! See it wasn’t that bad, was it? Now it’s time to pat yourself on the back for all your hard work. Just think now you have an excellent resume on hand to send out to potential employers to score the perfect summer job or internship.
