As long as customers exist, so will marketing professionals. But how can you become one? Majoring in Marketing, Computer Science, or Business may give you a head start, but it’s just the tip of the iceberg.
Here are 5 strategies to help you land a marketing job out of college.
1) Build Real Skills
Your parents may be proud of you for earning a degree, but employers don’t seem to care nearly as much. According to a study by Millennial Branding, 73% of hiring managers feel like college fails to adequately prepare students for the real world. And, 64% said they would consider a candidate without a degree.
Don’t wait until after you get your diploma to discover that you need entry-level skills to land an entry-level job. Take advantage of the resources available to you in college to develop skills that carry you beyond graduation.
Find an internship that teaches you more than how to make a killer cup of coffee. Target opportunities that allow you to get hands dirty with marketing. Don’t worry if you can’t find an internship in your city – look for remote internship options or projectships. That’s part of the beauty of internet marketing – it can be done from anywhere.

2) Own Your Digital Identity
Now that you have the skills to build a basic website and promote it, put your skills on display. Give an employer the chance to learn more about you. Create your digital profile and personal brand. Here’s how to stand out:

Competition is fierce and there will always be someone more qualified than you. Resumes are boring. So are 90% of cover letters. Stop telling employers who you are and actually show them.
Inject your personality into your application to set yourself apart and demonstrate to employers that you’d be a great addition to the team. 43% of respondents to the Millennial Branding study named “culture fit” as the most important factor when making a new hire. And, 84% of hiring managers cited “a positive attitude” as one of the most desirable skills. Be positive, be optimistic, and be excited.
