What pushes the iPhone as the best-selling phone in the US? or the Tesla to be the best selling car? It’s having a perfect pitch. Look at cases like Steve Jobs pitching the iPhone, or Elon Musk pitching the Tesla model; they were both well-prepared and "pitch perfect" before they blew the world away with their products.
So this article will provide an insight of how to pitch to your boss about an idea that you have, or venture capitalists about an opportunity that you see.
Be prepared for an interesting story, since people always love a great story. Start brainstorming a couple of points you want to get across. And preferably prepare a script for about 4-5 minutes. 2) Slide show
Along with an analogy, it would be great to accommodate it with a slideshow. But the slideshow has to be short and concise. The fewer words the better. 3) Be quantitative
The only way to really convince the audience, is not your opinion, but some quantitative evidence. Numbers, numbers, numbers. Let's say you are trying to pitch a car product, instead of saying, “There will be about 1000 users per day,” start by offering a step to step analysis of how you get 1000 users. You can start by estimating the total household population in the US, then you can make a couple more intellectual assumption to get 1000 users. Keep in mind that it does not have to be a perfect assumption, but it does need to make logical sense.
When you are pitching your idea, you have to pitch it as if it is your life. Oftentimes, when you pitch it with passion, audience will be passionate it as well. Remember to add some emotion to your pitch. Put emphasis on specific words that can convey your message. Words such as Must, Should, Please.. Can engage your audience in your pitch as well as convincing them that they should be listening to your idea.
Always credit your teammates. Audience loves to know who is responsible for the development of the idea. Also, if you are pitching a product, its best to list credentials of your teammates. That includes what kind of project they previously did, or what are they were responsible for in this project. It can be as simple as one to two sentences, and of course, a small portfolio picture would be best.
Before you end your pitch, you should recap of what you want the audience to take away from you. That includes a call to action, a word of advice, or anything that involves you conveying a message to the audience. You should dedicate around 30 seconds- 1 minute to sum up what you wanted to say. Also thank your listener for paying attention to your pitch, as well as asking them if there's any confusion that they would like to clarify from you and your team.
