WORKPLACE SUCCESS / 18 March 20195 Ultra-Effective Ways to Work Smarter, not Harder
A Study found in Society for Human Resource Management shows that 72% of employees rank "respectful treatment of all employees at all levels" to be the most important factor in job satisfaction.
Respect is like the cherry on the top of the job experience cake! Without it, workers are left feeling incomplete and could lack motivation. Respect is the consideration for people’s privacy, beliefs, personality, and abilities.
The good news for you is that gaining respect is easier than you think! Just follow these 5 simple steps and you will be on your way to a happy and satisfactory work environment:
1.) Speak Calmly and Listen to Others
Communication is key! If someone suggests something that you don’t agree with, make it a point to hear them out and show them that you are interested in what they have to say. Speaking calmly even if you are not in the best of moods or are just frustrated about something displays your patience and understanding to the people you work with, in turn, these people will view you in a positive light and will give you the respect you deserve.
This is such an important step because people tend to respect those people who are willing to step back and show their consideration for others thoughts and feeling towards a certain subject. So make yourself personable and approachable, it will help you out in the long run!
2.) Display Self-Confidence
Remember: you got this job for a reason! You were hand-selected to work for your position because your employer felt that you had something to bring to the table. Self-confidence is important to show in the workplace because it lets people know that you can handle any kind of situation with finesse. This is a great trait to take with you to work and hopefully, the self-confidence you possess will rub off on others! So be proud of yourself, you are doing an amazing job.
NOTE: Please remember to not confuse self-confidence with arrogance. Show your employers and co-workers that you are here to help them out no matter what!
3.) Get to Know Your Co-workers
“Socializing with your co workers is essential for your career,” says Alexander Kjerulf, an international author and speaker on happiness at work.
Chances are, you see your co-workers more than anyone else during your week. It would beneficial to get to know them more on a personal basis. Don’t get me wrong, you don’t have to become BFF’s with them, but light conversation about what is going on in their lives shows them that you are more than just a paid worker. Having personal interactions goes beyond cordialness, it creates a sense of trust of respect that will ease into your workspace. Here are some conversation starters that can help strike up that friendly work vibe bond:
These are a sure way to get your co-workers talking and hopefully ease into a strong work relationship that leads into respect as time goes on. Remember though, not everyone in your workplace is going to want a conversation with you and that is completely fine. Don’t let that discourage you, there will always be people who will welcome the gesture.
4.) Be Organized and Stay On Top of Tasks
This step seems simple enough, right?
Getting respect at work goes beyond being personable; your workmanship and organizational skills also pay a huge role in how people perceive you at work. The fact of the matter is that if you show that you are dedicated to your work and strive to be the absolute best you can be, people will take notice in that and that will gain you some serious respect brownie points! Keep your work area clean and dress to impress, these are small things you can do that shows others that you are here for a reason.
5.) Give Praise Where Praise Is Deserved
It’s no secret that we all love to feel appreciated for our hard work and dedication. If you work hard on a project and it goes unnoticed, that can discourage you from working harder next time. As great as it is to receive praise, it’s even better to be the one praising someone else. This is a great way to gain respect from your co-workers because it shows them that you actually acknowledge them and their efforts. It can go beyond the work they do, it can also be complimenting them on their outfit or a story they told! It takes only a couple of seconds to make someone’s day.
There you have it! 5 simple ways to gain respect at work. That wasn’t so tough now, was it?
Always remember: In order to gain respect you must give it yourself. Be respectful, treat others the way you wanna be treated, and that’s a recipe for success!
