CAREER / 12 July 2017How to Remain Optimistic During the Job Hunt
First off, what is potential?
According to the Webster Dictionary, potential simply means “possible, or a possibility”. To me, potential can be defined as all of the knowledge/abilities that a person has DEVELOPED to do a certain task; like write a 13-page research paper in one night, or figure out the difference between methane and nitrogen gasses. Of course, these are simple examples, but understanding potential can be more simple that you would think.
To figure out what someone with potential looks like, look in the mirror!
Everyone has potential, or the ability to gain potential. The best ways you can do this is:
STAY motivated. Don’t just slug through your life with no purpose…
Have CONCISE goals. This can help you feel like you have a solid plan for going forward but remember…
EVERYONE has potential, and if you realize that early in life you can work harder at cultivating that potential.
Okay, so you know what it is...now how do I cultivate a seemingly non-tangible thing?
Some of the ways I have learned to unleash my potential is pretty simple. For example, I have learned to understand that living up to my potential does not have a set path like my degree process does. Sometimes, I have to be comfortable with change and being uncomfortable. Here are some other ways that I think people can learn how to unleash their potential:
Does not include only good experiences but bad experiences too. Learn from examples! You can learn from people's knowledge, attitudes, skills, and most importantly habits. By observing others, you can grow your own understanding about life.
Be okay with being different from your peers. That’s how you will grow in a way where you and others around you can gain from it. People like Bill Gates, Stephen Hawking, and Steve Jobs were all people that were thought to be downright weird. They are all people that others aspire to be today.
What you are good at, what you love, etc. This doesn’t mean trying to do things that you KNOW you aren't interested in because it makes money, or looks better on your resume. Don’t waste your time doing something that you don’t like to do.
Someone who you can look up to that has achieved their set goal, or are on their way to greatness! Some role models do not even have to be interested in what you are interested in to teach you something new. In fact, if you can find someone to teach you something new, or offers you a new perspective on an old topic, all the better!
And finally....BE CONFIDENT
With your words, actions, and personality. Create a strong vision of yourself in your mind, and strive to become that person. If you feel scared about reaching out, ask yourself, "Why?". Most of the time the answer will be that you, me, and everyone else is afraid of failure. I can tell you now that those fears will always be there, but that those that work past these fears are the successful people that we know today. Don't sit around and wait for opportunities to present themselves in your life...seek them out yourself!
Now that you have your personal tools to live up to your potential…
To recap, don’t be afraid to go for it! As Charles Dickens once said, “I never could have done what I have done without the habits of diligence, and determination to concentrate on one subject at a time.” Since you already have what you need inside of yourself, there is no fear on figuring out what makes you...you. If you are determined and diligent, then you should be able to unlock your potential to do things way out of your scope of imagination!
For those of you that are motivated, go out and find one thing that you do well. Get involved and seek it out until the end! For example, if you are really good with computers, pick up a course or two in coding. Or find yourself a mentor! Prosky has many different training modules that can get you on the right track to finding out what makes you happy!
Overall, it is better to discover your potential than to let it fall by the wayside. If you are interested in joining one of Prosky’s many training modules or finding yourself a mentor, create a candidate profile today!
