Should You Train New Hires Before They Start Work?

 The first few days of being hired can be nerve-wracking for any new hire. They are in a new environment, they don’t know anyone and they have no idea what they are supposed to do. 

The new hire wants to make a good impression but they are looking for guidance to know what to do. It is the manager's responsibility to help the new hire feel comfortable and help guide them into this new job.  Some companies believe that new employees can learn as they go and ignore planning a new hire training program. Even though there is plenty of time for on the job training, knowing how to train new employees effectively means that you will have higher retention rates and happier employees. 


When considering if you should train your new hires before they start work, you should take a look at these statistics: 

The resolution to making these numbers lower are simply having a training program for your new hires. Spending the time and effort to training new hires before they start work will ultimately save you money, time, make the company more desirable and providing overall satisfaction in the workforce. 

Training new hires are more than just showing them where the coffee maker is or how to copy the paper. Having an effective training includes helping the new employees settle into the flow of the company and help them do their job.


1. Figure out What New Employees Need to Know

Before you begin developing a new hire training program, you need to know what exactly they need to know. If your company has never figured that out, then the time is now!  Here are some tips to help you out:

  • Identify all tasks that employees need to know: Break up all the tasks that the new hire needs to know. It could be anything from the tasks they need to do in the first week, where to find HR or how to use the calendar. You know what your company needs so you will know what needs to be written out. 
    Be as clear and as specific as you can be. You can also ask your employees what they think will be helpful for new hires to know since they were more recently in the new hire's shoes. Have someone check your work and make sure everything is clear and nothing is missing. 

  • Pick out the best person to do the training: Not everyone is equipped to train new hires. Choose someone who is friendly, patient, a good leader, a teacher, and a good listener. 

  • Provide resources: Training new hires is essential. Providing adequate tools and time to learn new procedures and practices can make or break your new hire training program. 

  • Determine needed training: This can be a variety of different types of training whether it’s online training or if it’s more hands-on practice. Decide what the best type of training will be for your new hires. 

  • Check for understanding: It’s not enough to just offer the information and hope it sticks. After training, check the employees understanding. This helps you to know if employees feel confident in what they have learned or if they need more information.


2. Make Sure All Managers Are on the Same Page.

It can be easy to forget where employees are on the onboarding process. Creating a new hire checklist can help everyone know where each hire is at on the onboarding. This new hire checklist can include:

  • Sending a welcome email with first-day practical things like parking and dress code

  • Making sure their office space is ready

  • Set up a mentor with the new hire

  • Planning meetings to help new employees feel welcomed and supported

  • Identifying priority topics employee needs training on

3. Include Onboarding Best Practices into Your Procedures

One important part of finding success is having employees who succeed in their work. To help your employees be successful, you need to incorporate an onboarding process. Here’s what makes for more effective onboarding.

  • Start training before the first day: A welcome email and a team-wide introduction either via email or video conferencing can go a long way to ease the first-day transition.

  • Develop and use a checklist: As just mentioned, a checklist keeps your onboarding process on track even when the day gets busy.

  • Allow enough time for questions: Allowing enough time for questions can arguably be one of the most important parts of onboarding. New hires can be nervous and might have a lot of questions. Getting their questions answered helps give new hires a peace of mind and feel more comfortable with the new job.

  • Create a memorable first day: It’s likely that your employee is new to the area so make sure they meet the whole team and feel welcomed. Take the time to learn who they are, what their interests are and what they hope for when you meet with them. It shows that you care and the new employee will feel like you more welcomed.


4. Plan Regular Reviews and Don’t Be Afraid to Make Any Adjustments

You may spend a lot of time developing the perfect training plan but if you don’t implement it, it will just be a waste. The best way to implement your plan is to have regular reviews to see how the new hire is doing. You might consider having a review at the end of the day, end of the week, end of the month, end of 6 months, etc. Having regular reviews will allow you to see what is working for the new hires and what is not. 

This will allow you to see the effectiveness changes you need to make to make your training program better. The goal is to help your employee be productive and happy so that your company can be successful. 

 

Final thoughts:

You can choose to not train your new hires before they start work but we highly advise you to train them. The sooner you begin implementing an onboarding process for a new employee the better your chances of successfully integrating the new employee into the company quickly and well. The quicker your new employee adapts to their new work, the more successful your company can become.
